2023-2024 Men's Basketball Preview

New Head Coach Horton & Staff Bring Offense, Experience, & Innovation

The 2023-2024 season brings a fresh start for the Warren Wilson Men's Basketball team, with the appointment of a new Head Coach, Chris Horton. Known for his prowess in developing high-powered and egalitarian offenses, Coach Horton's arrival is generating great anticipation. Last year, his offensive scheme led his team to remarkable achievements, finishing in the top 15 in the nation in Pace and Scoring. At various times during the season, they ranked as high as 11th in the nation in Assisted Points. This offensive philosophy promises an exciting style of play for the Owls.

Joining Coach Horton's staff are Ray Lopes and Matt Slone. Lopes, a longtime NCAA Division 1 coach, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the coaching team. Slone, a highly successful grassroots basketball coach from Florida, adds a fresh perspective and digital media storytelling prowess to chronicle the Owls journey.

The Core Four

While the team looks forward to a new era under Coach Horton, they have the advantage of four returning players from last year's team. Seniors Antonio Banuelos and Nedas Nacickas bring valuable experience and leadership to the squad. They will be joined by sophomores Nasir Cotton and Dylan Wheatley, forming a core group that will be instrumental in bridging the gap between Owls Basketball past and present.

Key Losses: Adonis King and Braxton Crocker

As with any season, there are challenges to overcome. The team will face the loss of Adonis King, who has made the brave decision to take a step back from basketball to prioritize his mental health. Additionally, Braxton Crocker will be sidelined for the season due to a torn ACL. The Owls will undoubtedly miss their contributions, but they are fully supportive of these players in their respective journeys.

The Incoming Eight

To bolster the roster, the team welcomes eight newcomers, a mix of college transfers and true freshmen. The four college transfers, Tashaun Simpson, Yoshi Kendrick, Marcus Andrews, and Demarshaun Worley, bring experience , toughness, and know-how to the team. Meanwhile, the four true freshmen, Daishaun Handy, Ibraheem Essader, Aaron Cutherbertson, and Jason Hines Jr., invigorate the roster with fresh legs and a variety of skill sets.

A Lean Roster Ready to Contribute

With a roster of only 12 players, the Warren Wilson Men's Basketball team understands that contributions will need to come from everyone. Coach Horton's egalitarian offensive approach is well-suited to maximize the potential of each player on the team. This collaborative effort will be key to achieving their goals this season.

The Schedule

The Owls kick off their season on the road in Raleigh, facing William Peace University in what promises to be an exciting matchup. The team's home opener is scheduled for Saturday, November 18th, at 2 p.m. against Methodist University, offering campus and community fans a chance to witness the action up close.

The schedule also includes some tough challenges, including a road game against NCAA Division 1 opponent Elon and a showdown in Virginia with the reigning NCAA Division 3 National Champion, Christopher Newport. These challenging games will test the team's mettle and provide an opportunity to measure their progress and potential.

As the 2023-2024 season unfolds, excitement and optimism are in the air at Warren Wilson. With the leadership of Coach Horton and his staff, the "sticktoitiveness" of returning players, and the infusion of fresh talent, the Owls are ready to compete in the Coast 2 Coast Conference. Fans can expect thrilling, high-paced action on the court and a team that's united in their pursuit of success. Stay tuned for a memorable season ahead.
