Asheville, NC - The Warren Wilson College women's soccer team picked up a decisive 10-0 victory over the Hiwassee College Tigers on Saturday afternoon. The Owls were led by Senior Bianca Canizio (Murphy, NC) and Freshman India Little-Dula (Morganton, NC) who each scored three goals in the contest.
The Owls got on the board in the 2nd minute when Little-Dula found the back of the net with an assist from Courtney Schwein (Asheville, NC). Not long after in the 8th minute, Junior Sydney Grange (Burlingame, CA) served a great ball and found Bianca Canizio's head. Canizio placed it just right beating the outstretched goalkeeper, Bailie McMahan. Canizio continue to add to her tally and in the 12th minute scoring two more goals, 30 seconds apart to earn the hat trick. A minute later, Schwein would net her first collegiate goal in the 13th minute.
The Owls would add two more goals before halftime, as Little-Dula would score her second goal and third goal of the match.
In the second half, Warren Wilson would add three more goals to the score sheet. Senior Whitney Brotherton (Greencastle, IN) scored her first goal of the season in the 54th minute and Sophomore Fonda Heenehan (Spartanburg, SC) tallied the final two goals in the 60th and 87th minute.
We are heading in the right direction," said Head Coach Lydia Vandenbergh after the match. "We did the simple things well today and that is going to translate to more success for us in the coming weeks. Congratulations to Hiwassee College for starting their inaugural season. We wish them the best of luck."
Warren Wilson dominated the match in every sense of the word, outshooting the Tigers 39-1 overall, and had the 5-0 edge in corner kicks as well. Tiger's goalkeeper, McMahan recorded 18 saves in the match.
The Owls will travel this Tuesday, September 1st to Winston-Salem to play Salem College at 5pm.
