Owls Travel to William Peace for Season Opener

For the first match of the season, the Owls faced off against the Pacers of William Peace University. A hot Raleigh afternoon reminded the Owls that fall isn't quite here yet, with temperatures nearing 90 degrees.

The Owls hit the ground running with career debuts for several new faces on the team, including transfer Alex Valenzuela, and freshmen Cameron Bryenton, Mia West, Lorena Salazar, and Verena Pate, who were among the starters. The Owls and Pacers found themselves in a stalemate through water breaks due to the heat. During a long defensive possession, the Pacers mounted a continuous attack, which resulted in a goal to put them up 1-0 halfway through the first half. The Owls soon found their footing and regrouped to hold the Pacers scoreless until the end of the half.

The Owls came out strong in the second half with multiple shots and opportunities that were unable to materialize into a goal. The Pacers scored again 10 minutes into the second half from a corner kick, which put them up 2-0, and that would be the final score.

Tactically, Warren Wilson was able to keep up with the Pacers and, at times, dominated the game. The Owls played effectively from the back, combined well going forward, and pressed high, not allowing William Peace to advance up the field.

The Owls took this loss in stride as an opportunity to grow and improve as they continue their season. Despite the loss, the team's spirits were high. This game demonstrated great foundational skills and foreshadowed positive signs for future success under the guidance of Coach Maxi, his staff, and the team's veterans. Senior captain Kyra Collins said, "The team connectivity and energy showed on the field today. We achieved our goal of 50% fewer goals conceded than last season, and we will continue to improve as the season progresses."

The team looks forward to building on the successes they found today in their home opener against Pfeiffer University on Tuesday, September 3rd, at 5 p.m.
