Owls Can't Hang On in Season Opener Against the Falcons

SWANNANOA, NC - The Owls were looking forward to a return to the Hank Steinbrecher Sports Complex for their home opener against the Pfeiffer Falcons. This first home game of the season was met with anticipation and excitement, as the Owls had many new faces in key positions, along with a strong returning group of upperclassmen.

The match began with a setback for the Owls, as the Falcons quickly scored a goal in the 4th minute. However, after a brief regroup, the Owls shifted momentum and began to apply consistent pressure on the Falcon defense. Their offensive persistence paid off with the Owls' first goal of the season, scored by freshman Mia Weist and assisted by junior Eden Gfeller. Despite their best efforts to build on this advantage, the Owls were unable to secure another goal, even with several promising opportunities.

The Falcons came out strong in the second half and caught the Owls off guard to go up 2-1. After a series of mounting injuries in the second half, the Owls found themselves stretched thin. Despite an arduous defensive effort and over 14 total saves by WWC goalie Callie Aerni, the Owls conceded two more goals, resulting in a final score of 1-4.
Though the outcome was not what the Owls had hoped for, they took the game as a valuable learning experience. There were notable improvements compared to last season and even from their previous game against the William Peace Pacers. At times, the Owls showcased impressive ball movement and communication, both offensively and defensively, successfully neutralizing several Falcon scoring opportunities and creating their own chances.

The team remains optimistic and eager to build on their progress as they look forward to playing on their home field again. Their next match is set for Saturday, September 7th, at 4 p.m., where they will face Asbury University.
