The Owls flew out to another strong start in Tuesday night's rematch against the Brevard Tornados. After losing the previous matchup by 14 just over two weeks ago, the Owls sent an early statement by getting out to an early nine-point lead. In his first collegiate start,
Aaron Cuthbertson had the first five points for the Owls.
Antonio Banuelos added his own five-point run to make the lead 14-5 just over seven minutes into the game.
With great team defense and balanced scoring, the Owls were able to push their lead to 12 multiple times in the first half before entering the halftime break with a 37-29 lead.
After another fast start to the half, the Owls were able to push the lead to 12 two more times in the first six minutes of the second. Over the next nine minutes, however, the Owls could only muster six points and their 12-point lead turned into a seven-point deficit when the Tornados made the score 62-55 with under five minutes to play.
In just under 90 seconds,
Yoshi Kendrick helped the Owls come back with assists on three consecutive possessions, culminating with a transition kick to
Antonio Banuelos for a game-tying three to make the game 62-62 with 3:27 to go.
After trading a pair of baskets, the Owls and Tornados entered the final minute tied at 64. After taking the possession into the dying seconds, Owls
Yoshi Kendrick was able to drive and kick out to
Nasir Cotton, whose three-point attempt rolled around the rim before finally falling with one second left on the shot clock and 29 seconds left in the game.Â
After Cotton's three finally fell home, the Tornados pushed to search for the equalizer but to no avail. Banuelos secured the defensive rebound and pitched ahead to Kendrick who attacked the rim in transition knowing the Tornados needed to foul. As the Tornados fouled, Kendrick tossed up a shot that kissed the glass before falling through. Kendrick added the free throw to put the icing on the cake of a 70-64 Owls win.
Antonio Banuelos led all scorers with 20 while adding six assists and five rebounds on 50% shooting. Banuelos was one of four hyper-efficient double-digit Owls scorers.
Aaron Cuthbertson scored 19 points on 9 shots in his first start;
Dylan Wheatley added 11 and
Nasir Cotton added 10, both on 4-5 shooting from the field.Â
Yoshi Kendrick had a complete floor game with 8 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. In his first featured minutes of the season,
Demarshaun Worley helped key Owl defensive runs as they built multiple double-digit leads in the first and second half.
The Owls will take a break for a little over a month to tackle Finals and enjoy the holiday season before returning to action on Tuesday, January 9th at Erskine College in South Carolina.
