Saturday's matinee between Warren Wilson and the visiting Asbury Eagles had added significance as it was Senior Day for Owls' lone Senior,
Antonio Banuelos. Before the game, Banuelos was honored at half court alongside his mother and brother. As the crowd cheered, the PA Announcer read testimonials from various people around campus who had laudatory words about Banuelos.
With electricity still in the air, the Owls came out immediately and seized the lead on a
Yoshi Kendrick three-pointer eight seconds into the game. The Owls led or tied for the first nine minutes of the game. Banuelos helped key the opening stretch with 5 points, 2 rebounds, and one assist.
After some turnovers to end the half, the Owls entered halftime down 9.Â
Six minutes into the second half,
Nasir Cotton assisted a Banuelos layup to trim the Eagles lead to five. Cotton was the driving force behind the Owls gritty half court defense all night. Cotton compiled seven points, eight rebounds, three assists, and a block while holding the Eagles formidable center to 5-of-12 from the field.
Unfortunately the Owls were able to get no closer than five.Â
Dylan Wheatley scored 16 points,
Yoshi Kendrick added five threes to total 15 points, and
Marcus Andrews added 7 points for the Owls Saturday. Still, no one outshined Banuelos who poured in 23 points to go with 10 rebounds and four assists on his Senior Night.
The Owls are in action for their final home game of the season against Erskine College Tuesday night February 13.
