SWANNANOA, NC - The Warren Wilson Women's Lacrosse team hosted NC Wesleyan on Saturday and ended the day with a 15-9 win.
The Owls opened the 1st quarter with 3 back to back goals. Sydney Weber scored twice with her second assisted by Callie Aerni. Aerni then added a goal with a feed by Weber. The Bishops got on the board with 4:51 left in the first from Kelsi Oyer. The Owls responded with a drive to cage by Gar Watlington, scoring the first out of five we would see on the day. The Bishops closed out the first quarter with a goal from Lailah Espinal.
The Owls entered the 2nd quarter with a lead of 4-2. Defensive stops were prevalent in the 2nd, with the Bishops scoring just 1 goal and Weber and Aerni combined for 2 more assisted goals.
The Owls led at the half, 6-3, with full steam ahead into the 3rd. Watlington opened with half with a goal at 14:35. The Bishops responded less than a minute later with 1 goal, but then the Owls took control of the offensive end. Weber put up 3 more on the board after dominating the draw controls, despite the rain and snow.
With a 10-4 lead and a Bishops' yellow card to end the 3rd quarter, the Owls started with the ball in the 4th quarter. Despite the advantage, the Owls couldn't capitalize on this power play. The Bishops added 5 goals in the 4th quarter, equal to the Owls five from Watlington (3) and Weber (2). The Owls added the last 2 goals of the game to win 15-9.
The Owls had notable team performances on the defensive end with Goalie Hayden Drescher and defenders Taylor Smith, Caroline Smith, and Madisyn Jutton. Sydney Weber broke 2 program records with 15 draw controls in the game and 15 ground balls. Callie Aerni (2g, 2a, 5gb) and Gar Watlington (5g, 4gb) had career bests.
The Owls (1-1) host Brevard on Thursday, February 29 at 4PM for the annual Ridge Rivalry Game.
