Owls Show Resilience in Defeat to Erskine College

SWANNANOA, NC — The Warren Wilson College women's basketball team fought hard but ultimately fell to the Erskine College Flying Fleet, 83-64, on November 12, 2024, at Devries Athletic Gymnasium. Despite the loss, the Owls displayed flashes of brilliance, particularly from standout performances by Moosie Lewis and Weronika Swojak.

The game began as a closely contested battle, with the Owls leading 19-15 after the first quarter. Erskine managed to narrow the gap by halftime, trailing by just one point, 34-33. However, the Flying Fleet broke the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Warren Wilson 26-12. The fourth quarter saw Erskine extend their advantage to secure the victory.

Key Performances:

  • Moosie Lewis led the Owls with 17 points, including five rebounds and three steals in her 35 minutes on the court. Her aggressive playmaking kept the Owls competitive throughout the game.
  • Weronika Swojak contributed a double-double with 10 points and 18 rebounds, showing her dominance in the paint.
  • Jordan McGhee added 11 points, while Ellie Martin and Mari McNeal each scored 6 points, providing solid support.

Erskine's Ahrianna Scott proved difficult to contain, scoring 14 points and grabbing 6 steals. Keziyah Sanders also made her presence felt, contributing 11 points and 4 rebounds for the Flying Fleet.

Despite the loss, the Owls showed resilience, especially in their rebounding efforts, grabbing 45 rebounds and scoring 40 points inside the paint. Turnovers, however, proved costly as Erskine converted 27 Owl turnovers into 35 points.

Coach's Comments:

"We saw some great individual efforts today, but as a team, we need to be more consistent on both ends of the floor," said Coach Robin Martin-Davis. "The third quarter hurt us, but I'm proud of how our players kept battling."
