Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Owls Fall Short Against Brevard On The Road

On Wednesday September 6th, the Owls (0-1-0) traveled to Brevard College to face the Tornados (0-1-1) in a match that saw both sides looking to get their first win of the young season.

The match began with the Owls frustrating Brevard defensively but only until the 13th minute when a giveaway in the midfield led to Brevard senior forward Ryan Lynch opening the scoring. Lynch picked up the ball and ran at the Owls back line before hitting a strike towards the bottom left corner that deflected off Owls goalkeeper Kian Godwin's outstretched hand and into the goal. The Owls responded by staying patient and sticking with their game plan, eventually going into halftime with the score 1-0 in favor of Brevard.

At the beginning of the second half, the game began to open up and the Owls saw more of the ball in Brevard's attacking third. In the 55th minute, sophomore midfielder Benjamin "Benji" Soto picked out a cross field diagonal ball to freshman winger Moises Dias who then skated past the Brevard right back with a step over. Diaz served the ball into the box where it was picked up by senior midfielder Will Feehan who turned his man and found Soto for a 1-2 combination that took Feehan into the box. Feehan cut the ball back across the box to freshman forward Ryan Kiser who fired the ball first time past the Brevard goalkeeper at the near post to equalize the scoring. The Owls were able to fend off Brevards the 64th minute, when Lynch served a ball into the box that found freshman midfielder Santiago Romero on the back post, who then poked the ball into the middle of the box where it reached Lynch. Lynch capped the play with a one touch finish into the back of the net to give the Tornados a one goal lead and the eventual game winner.

Despite multiple chances for the Owls down the stretch, they were unable to equal the scoring and left Brevard's Ives-Family Field with a 2-1 loss despite many positive takeaways.

A few standout players for the Owls include:

  • Kiser scored the Owls only goal of the game and the first of his collegiate career.
  • Sophomore midfielder John Rhoden provided constant energy and made a number of important tackles in the midfield.
  • Senior defender Adam Kluge supplied important help building out from the back in his first game playing right back for the Owls.
  • Diaz gave Brevard fits on the left wing when he made the switch out wide in the second half.
  • Owls goalkeeper Kian Godwin made five saves over the course of the match.

The Owls (0-2-0) will return to action on Saturday, September 9th at home at the Hank Steinbrecher Athletic Complex in a matchup with the Ferrum Panthers (1-2-0). The match will kickoff at 4pm.
