Owls Basketball falls in regular season finale to the Mountaineers 81-59 in Berea, KY.
The Owls came into the game ranked seventh in the USCAA DII and the Mountaineers started the day in the second spot in the DI poll.
Warren Wilson started the game strong against Berea College, using a 15-6 run to take an eight point lead at 28-20 with 5:57 to go in the first half. The Owls would see the Mountaineers close the gap just before the half, however, ending the first period on a 15-8 run. The Owls went into the half with a 36-35 lead thanks to a jumper at the buzzer by Seven Horton, Jr.
In the second half it was all Mountaineers. The game was tied at 39 with 17:00 remaining and Berea went on a tear, using a 17-6 run to go up double digits for the first time in the game, 56-45 with 11:53 left. Berea's defense dominated the Owls during the second half stretch. Justin Gonyea hit a jumper at the 13:53 mark and Owls were held scoreless for nearly seven minutes until Gonyea was able to strike again with a three point make. The Owls managed just four field goals over the final 13:53 with three of the makes coming with less than two minutes to go, with the game firmly in Berea's control.
Berea outshot Warren Wilson 54% to 41%. The Mountaineers hit 13-23 from behind the arc. Berea was also +11 on the glass (31-20), which prevented the Owls from finding any second chance opportunities.
Justin Gonyea led the Owls with 16 points and Ty Johnson had 13 in his final regular season game.
The loss drops the Owls to 16-13. Warren Wilson's post season fate will be decided Tuesday evening when the USCAA hosts its selection show at 5:30.
