The Warren Wilson College women's soccer team dropped the first match of the season to Berea College Saturday, 3-1. The Owls will look to rebound as they travel to Montreat College, Tuesday. Kickoff is 6:30 pm.
The Owls got off to a slow start in the first half with Berea dominating much of the play. The score would remain 0-0 until the 16th minute when the Mountaineers would capitalize on a defensive clearance and finish inside the 18-yard box. The Owls went into halftime down 0-1.
The second half showed much more promise from the Owls. Despite the effort, the Mountaineers would add two more goals in the 53rd and 66th minute of play. The Owls, however, continued to battle creating several chances. They would finally be rewarded, drawing a penalty in the 85th minute. Jazmin Featherstone would step up and put the Owls on the scoreboard. This is the second goal for Featherstone this season. With renewed energy from the goal, the Owls continued to be dangerous in the attack but the Mountaineers would hold onto the lead.
The Owls were outshot in the first half by the Mountaineers 12-1 but the second half led 8-6. Goalkeeper Susie Lusardi tallied 6 saves.
