Swannanoa, N.C. – The Warren Wilson College women's soccer team lost to Regent University in an exciting senior day matchup.
The Owls jumped on the scoreboard first in the 6th minute when sophomore Sierra Bell played a well-timed ball through the backline to senior Jocelyn Hartung. Hartung found herself alone on a breakaway and finished the ball in the opposite corner beating the outstretched goalkeeper. Regent would level the game in the 21st minute. Regent would dominate the remaining part of the first half adding two additional goals making the score line 3-1 at half.
The Owls regrouped at halftime and started the second half strong despite going down one more goal in the 63rd minute. Two minutes later, senior Ashleigh Richter found herself one-versus-one on the flank and drove around the outside and headed towards goal. Richter placed the ball away from the goalkeeper giving the Owls the momentum they needed to press on. In the 72nd minute, junior Camille Ference made a great hustle play, sliding to poke the ball through to freshman Olivia Lawrence who was in to goal. Lawrence finished the shot making the score, 3-4. With less than 20 minutes remaining the Owls sent numbers forward and had chances to level the game but came up unsuccessful.
"I really thought we had opportunities to tie the game or even win the game today. My heart goes out to our seniors who really left everything out on the field in their last game here at home. They have given so much to the program and it was great to honor them at halftime. We have had a great season so far and we now focus on ending well in our last game of the season," said head coach Lydia Vandenbergh.
Regent outshot the Owls 13-8. Owls goalkeeper Susie Lusardi tallied 7 saves.
The Owls head to Hiwassee College Tuesday to round out the regular season. Kickoff is at 4:30pm.
