Swannanoa, N.C. – The #9 ranked Warren Wilson College women's soccer team defeated the #8 Johnson & Wales Wildcats Monday, 3-0.
After losing 0-1 in the final minutes of the match earlier this year, the Owls were looking for revenge. The first half of play displayed great soccer by both teams but it would be the Owls who would get on the scoreboard first. Off a corner kick, sophomore Sierra Bell sent the ball into the box where it bounced around after a blocked shot and ended up at the feet of senior Jocelyn Hartung. Hartung placed into the side net to give the Owls the 1-0 lead in the 35th minute. This is Hartung's third goal of the season. The Owls owned the momentum and found another opportunity for goal just a few minutes later when freshman Chloe Riess was taken down in the box. Riess took the penalty kick and put the Owls up 2-0 in the 38th minute. The Owls went into halftime 2-0, each team recording 6 shots apiece.
The second half of play, the Owls defense came up big multiple times, denying the Wildcats of any goals. The Owls would seal the victory in the 63rd minutes when Bell would hit a free kick that was placed perfectly with pace and precision.
The Wildcats outshot the Owls 13-12. Owls goalkeeper Susie Lusardi tallied 5 saves.
The Owls return to play home Friday, October 26 against Regent University at 4pm and again on Saturday, October 27th against Johnson University at 4pm. This will be the last home game for the Owls and we will honor the seniors at halftime for all their dedication to the college and soccer program.
