Swannanoa, N.C. - The Lady Owls opened the 2018-2019 with a loss to local rival Montreat 84-69.
The Owls had a great first quarter coming off of the excitement of senior guard Danasia Dumas being honored for her 2,000 career points prior to tip-off. The Cavaliers responded with an outstanding second quarter of their own, which found the Owls down by 12 at halftime.
Even though the Owls would remain even with the Cavs they were never able to overcome that deficit. Piggy Dumas led the Owls with 36points. Tierney Porter followed Dumas with 9 points.
The Owls forced 25 turnovers but struggled to capitalize around the rim.
"We missed a lot of easy shots in the paint tonight and also left 7 points on the foul line. Those two things combined, against a solid team, makes it hard to come away with a win. We still have work to do on offense and have to find other ways that relying on Piggy to score. That will come over time as we begin to develop our chemistry. I thought defensively we played well and that was what kept us in the game," stated head coach Robin Martin.
The Lady Owls travel to Hiwassee on October 30th. The Owls split with Hiwassee last year and are looking to avenge a 20 point loss at Hiwassee last year. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 P.M.
