The Warren Wilson College Owls triumphed over Blackburn College Saturday afternoon with a 5-2 win over the Beavers.
The owls dominated play in the first half applying good pressure onto the Beavers. The owls saw many attempts saved by the Blackburn goalkeeper with the owls outshooting the Beavers 15-5 in the first half.
However, the deadlock broke in the 34th minute against the run of play when the Beavers scored a goal off of a counter-attack that saw them get in behind the Owls defense to slot it past freshman goalkeeper, Solomon Love.
The Owls did not stay down long as they were awarded a penalty kick in the 37th minute off of a wreckless two-foot tackle in the box. Will Feehan scored the goal calm and composed sending the goalkeeper the other way.
The owls would double their lead four minutes later when the Owls hit the crossbar off of an attempt from distance by Freshman midfielder Andres Escobar. Freshman forward Paddington Mbumbgwa followed up the rebound to put the Owls 2-1 up going into the half.
The second half started with a bang for the Owls as the ball was played wide to Junior Forward Ethan Vanderbleek who outpaced the Beaver defender to get in behind 1 on 1 to slot the ball past the goalkeeper. The Beavers found a moment of bliss nine minutes later when the Owls scored an own goal that saw the Beavers cut the two-goal deficit to one.
The Owls responded well by closing out the match by scoring two more goals. Ethan Vanderbleek added to his tally with another good run from out wide that saw him get one on one with the goalkeeper to extend the Owl lead. Escobar added the fifth goal off of a beautifully placed shot from a direct kick.
The match ended with the Owls outshooting the Beavers 25-8.
