Road Team Rides Well at Clemson

Clemson, S.C. -- The Warren Wilson Cycling Team competed at Clemson University's Tiger Town Omnium on March 23-24. The team competed in the following events during the two-day race: a road race, individual and team time trials (on Saturday) and a criterium (on Sunday).

The team started off Saturday with a road race in the rolling hillside of Clemson. The first race of the day was the men's B race and Wilson had James Mayer competing. James raced well staying in the lead group. He would go on to finish a strong 15th place. The next set of races was the Men's C/D and Benj Welland fought hard to finish in 16th place. The Women's B and C races followed. Wilson's women's team finished well, with Mason Hopkins finishing a personal best in 5th place in the Women's B race and Lucy Packer finishing in 13th in the Women's C race.

Later that day, the Owls had one men's team in the Team Time Trial event where a small group of 4 riders ride together in a paceline and race against the clock. The team consisting of Mayer, Welland, and Nate Peters would go onto to finish well and were the only men's team comprised of no A level riders, an impressive result for this young team. Hopkins and Packer competed in the Individual Time Trial event. Hopkins secured a strong 3rd place in Women's B and Packer finished in 1st place in her first ever individual time trial.

On Sunday, the team participated in a criterium race at an elementary school parking lot. Welland finished well in 15th place despite getting caught behind a crash and experiencing some mechancial issues. Mayer finished 11th in a strong position in the lead pack of riders in Men's B. Hopkins picked her way through the field of women's B riders to finish in 8th place and Packer podiumed for the first time and finished well in 3rd place in Women's C.

The race weekend was a success by all accounts. Head Coach Mandy Gallagher said, "We are learning more and more about this team every week. It's exciting to see these dedicated riders develop and gain confidence!"
