Bristol, T.N.--The Warren Wilson Cycling Team competed at King University in Bristol, T.N. on March 30-31. The race weekend consisted of two criteriums, one on Saturday and one on Sunday. In addition, riders had the opportunity to participate in a Beginner's Racer Program prior to the start of each day's races hosted by Owls Head Coach Mandy Gallagher and the South East Collegiate Cycling Conference (SECCC).
The Owls raced well and looked strong in a super windy and fairly hilly course on the King University campus. James Mayer fought hard and finished in an elite group of riders at 7th place in Men's B. Benj Welland finished inside the top 20 for Men's C/D. Bella Cimeno, Mason Hopkins, and Lucy Packer raced in the Women's B/C field and would go on to place well in 6th, 9th, and 10th respectively.
On Sunday, the temps from the previous day in the 70s plummeted to the 40s during the races. Mayer fought hard after sustaining a crash in the Men's B race to finish in 11th place. Welland secured a top 20 place in Men's C/D. Cimeno finished 5th (and on the podium), Packer finished 7th, and Hopkins finished 8th in the Women's B/C field.
Gallagher stated after the races, "We worked hard out there. The progress that we are making in practices is really showing on race day. I am proud of this team's 'never quit' mindset. From Mayer's return to the field after his crash to Packer's tackling of the tricky descents, this team gives it their all each and every time!"
The team wraps up the conference road season next weekend at Milligan College on April 6 and 7.
