Cycling Finishes Second Overall At Cyclocross National Championships
Louisville, KY --The Warren Wilson Cycling Team competed at the USA Cycling National Championships on Dec. 13 and 14 at Joe Cresson Park in Louisville, Kentucky. The Owls were represented by sophomores Mason Hopkins and James Mayer.

The approximately 1.75 mile race course was difficult with lots of technical sections and a great deal of slippery, thick mud due to rainy conditions at the event venue. The team persevered and found success in both the Women's Varsity Race on Dec. 13 where Hopkins placed inside the top 35 and Mayer placed inside the top 50 in two very competitive fields. Due to their solid results, the team placed second overall in the Division 2 Team Omnium behind King University for the overall event.

When talking about the team's success at nationals, Head Coach Mandy Gallagher pointed out how the technical, muddy conditions were ideal for the team because "We ride outside year round whenever we can and that includes in the rain, mud, and cool weather, all of which we experienced at nationals this year. Our athletes came into the competition prepared both mentally and physically. That preparation showed well and we are pleased with our results!"

After a winter break, the team will regroup in mid-January and transition to some early preseason road cycling events.
