Briston, T.N. -- The Warren Wilson Cycling Team competed this past weekend at the King University Tornado Cross on Nov. 10.
The Owls squared off against competitive fields from the Southeastern Collegiate Cycling Conference (SECCC) in this cyclocross showdown. This young team garnered some impressive results.
The day started with the team relay. The Owls were the only team with 2 relay teams in the competition. Team 1 consisting of Mason Hopkins, James Mayer, and Nathaniel Greene. earned an impressive 5th place finish. Team 2 consisting of Bella Cimeno, Jordana Swartz, and Nate Peters fought hard for a 7th place finish.
The next event of the day was the Women's B/C race. First year and first time racer, Cimeno, was in a breakaway with another rider and would go on to win the race in an impressive fashion. Swartz fought hard and showed good form and had a good race. In the Men's B/C field, the Owls had three racers competing. Mayer would display great fitness and form and would go on to finish a strong second place. Peters and Greene, both in their first ever cyclcocross races, would finish in the top 12.In the Women's A field, Hopkins earned a hard fought 13th in a strong field.
When asked about the team's results, Head Coach Mandy Gallagher was pleased with the event, "We fought hard and showed a lot of fitness and form. Our team is young, but the potential is there. We are looking forward to our next races already!"
The next team event is a home race hosted by Warren Wilson College on Dec. 1.
