Coach's Spotlight: Bruce Hills

Coach's Spotlight: Bruce Hills

Next up in our Coach's Spotlight series is Head Men's and Women's Cross Country Coach and Director of Outdoor Programs Bruce Hills! Let's get to know more about Coach Hills;

How long have you been coaching for?

I have been coaching for 9 season, all being at Warren Wilson College.

How did you become the head coach here at the college?

I'm a lifelong runner, but had no coaching experience.  When I was offered the job I had the choice of coaching cross country, or teaching PED classes and chose to coach.

Besides coaching what made you come to Warren Wilson?

I had run on the trails for years and had friends working here, so when the opportunity to direct the outdoor programs and coach cross country presented itself I jumped in boots and all!

What is/are your vision/goals for the team?

I want to continue to grow the teams and work to attract faster runners, so that the program becomes more competitive.

How will you define success?

Success for our program will be having full rosters with committed runners that run with the team for four years.

Do you find it difficult to balance your time between your personal life and coaching?

Being a coach always presents a challenge when balancing work and home.  It's very time consuming and involves a lot of evening and weekend work.

What have you learned from your time coaching here?

With no prior coaching experience, I've been learning everything from the basics of organizing and leading practices, to developing a strong team culture.

What would be the highlight of being in your program? What do you want student-athletes to take from your program?

We go on a fall break camping trip to Lake James where the team gets to run on beautiful trails daily, enjoy some great hiking in Linville Gorge, paddling on the lake, and relaxing beach time.  The team also enjoys competing in the USCAA Cross Country Nationals.  Through these trips together and the teams many hours of practice, they form strong bonds, reinforce their love of running, and how being fit adds to their overall health and confidence.

What's a fun fact that most people don't know about you?

I've had the pleasure of being able to work and enjoy adventures on all the continents except Antarctica.
