Coach's Spotlight: Robin Martin

Coach's Spotlight: Robin Martin

Coach's Spotlight is a new series to highlight the Coaches of our amazing athletic teams here at Warren Wilson! First up is Head Women's Basketball coach and Assistant Athletic Director Robin Martin! Let's get to know more about Coach Martin;

How long have you been coaching for?

I have been coaching college basketball for 7 years and prior to that coached high school for 5 years.

How did you become the head coach here at the college?

I had a really successful first year at Penn State Lehigh Valley and I was familiar with Warren Wilson since they were also a part of the USCAA. My experience within the USCAA helped me become the head coach here.

Besides coaching what made you come to Warren Wilson?

I loved the community and family friendly atmosphere here at Warren Wilson. Asheville is also a great city to raise a family.

What is/are your vision/goals for the team?

We are still working towards earning that first USCAA National Championship, but I want to continue to build on our success and win the EMAC conference this year. Another 20 win season would be sweet as well!!

How will you define success?

To me defining success is showing signs of improvement. I want my players to improve as players, students, and people. Success is doing better on the court, in the classroom, and challenging ourselves to get involved in the community. Success is learning from our failures and improving on them.

Do you find it difficult to balance your time between your personal life and coaching?

I find it very difficult to get to all of my kids games and activities. My kids are my team's biggest fans and I try to bring them with me as much as I can.  During the season it is definitely a challenge so we try to soak up all the extra time we have together in the off season.

What have you learned from your time coaching here?

Warren Wilson has taught me to appreciate community and the uniqueness it brings. I have learned to embrace new ideas and to encourage acceptance.

What do you want student-athletes to take from your program?

My team has a lot of fun together. We have broken almost every women's basketball record here at the college and each accomplishment has brought a tremendous amount of pride. But most importantly I want my players to cherish these four years they have and to value the relationships they form with their teammates. These are the best years in your life and it is important to embrace each opportunity!

What's a fun fact that most people don't know about you?

Soccer is my favorite sport!!!!
